Since the Internet you can buy almost any, the most "sophisticated", cosmetic ingredient, making cosmetics with your own hands is becoming more and more popular. Can you seriously calculate not its effectiveness? We find out with Tiina Orasmäe-Meder, a cosmetologist, president of the Meder Center for Aesthetic Cosmetology, an expert in cosmetic safety at the European Parliament.
Do not try to repeat
The legendary Este Lauder, as you know, was preparing her first creams in the kitchen. And what prevents to repeat her example? Doing it yourself with your own hands is fun, creative, useful and cheap, say sites with magical names like Ali Baba assure us. In the shortest possible time they are ready to deliver almost any cosmetic ingredient to their home. And each one has recipes for magical transformation. Is it any wonder that more and more women armed with mixers and pharmacy scales are inspired to sculpt scrubs, creams and tonics in the kitchen. In principle, all this has the right to exist, ”Tiina Orasmäe-Meder believes,“ but only as a hobby.
Previously, handmade cosmetics included products made by girls who are prone to gardening and everything natural, ”Tiina says. - Or preparations "from a cosmetologist" in the salon. Today, with the advent of annual ingredients on sale, so many active girls have the illusion that they can cook their own cosmetics of the highest level. For them, it's kind of scrapbooking. I bought some components, mixed, and it turned out a great product. Of course, this is complete nonsense!
In my practice, many funny stories are associated with such naivety and gullibility. So one of the girls sent me a letter claiming that our concentrate for the correction of facial wrinkles does not work. Of course, I became interested: how is it that you applied it? It turned out that she ... cooked it herself. I took the formula of this tool (we do not hide them, we openly talk about the concentrations used). I bought all the necessary ingredients on the Internet, made an emulsion from the same oil, mixed everything with one percent kefir. But there is no effect! And it’s my fault! Or they write: why should I buy your concentrate to moisturize the skin, if I can prepare the same myself? But personally, I can’t prepare exactly the same concentrate as, for example, a Swiss laboratory.

Hard thing

"Kitchen" logic is not applicable to the preparation of cosmetics. Even if you ingeniously cook the most exquisite dishes, this does not mean that the cream will be equally brilliant.
1. Making cosmetics is not just about mechanically mixing the active ingredients. Creating a formula is a very difficult matter, requiring education, knowledge, skills and, of course, talent. If it weren’t, students of the faculty of chemical chemistry would work in all laboratories and make perfect identical cosmetics. However, in practice, some employees are recruited from laboratory to laboratory, while others are fired immediately after the start of work.
2. Preparation of a cosmetic product is a complex technical process with its important technical features. In industrial production, the emulsion is sometimes centrifuged at a speed of twelve and a half thousand revolutions per minute, in parallel adding 1 ml of active every ten minutes ten minutes using special equipment. It is unlikely that you will achieve the same result with a culinary mixer, pouring an ingredient into a thin stream from a bowl. In the same way, you will never make a plastic bag at home, even if you have all the necessary polymers at hand.
3. The acquisition of active ingredients is also not an easy task. Today on the sites you can buy almost any "fashionable" ingredients (from hyaluronic acid to peptides) in any quantity. But no one knows what will eventually come to you in these test tubes. Under the same name, different manufacturers offer different substances with unequal biological activity. Which is reflected in the price. Shea butter extracted from the same shea tree can cost from 3 to 600 dollars per kilogram and have a completely different composition.

Caution, craft!

Make a cream with your own hands, pack it in an elegant jar, dress it with a beautiful ribbon and send it as a gift ... Isn't it cute, warm and fresh? Making cosmetics takes hands and mind, gives rise to a pleasant feeling that you are doing something useful for yourself and your friends. However, a hobby in the form of knitting socks or embroidery with beads is undoubtedly more useful and safer, Tiina Orasmäe-Meder believes.
When buying an ingredient on a site, you never know what you can “run into”. I have a suspicion that they simply send a dummy as peptides. However, it is possible that these may be hazardous substances. Ingredients purchased on sites do not have toxicity certificates or so-called safety dossiers. And without them, no cosmetic product can go on sale.
In this sense, cosmetics made from natural products are undoubtedly more useful. When making a whitening mask, you yourself buy cottage cheese, you squeeze a lemon into it yourself. When you order albumin or collagen on the site, you have no idea who their manufacturers are, what the production looks like, whether mice from the ceiling fall there. People imagine some nice elves in white coats in sparkling nickel laboratories. Maybe this is so. And maybe not. At least I have never seen serious laboratories engage in online sales. To the world's largest manufacturers of ingredients, and so is the lineup of cosmetic companies. The question arises: what is the point of selling them in grams to girls on the Internet?
When I periodically see on Facebook that someone’s friend began to make cosmetics on their own, as they say "master is a master." However, more and more often they are trying to sell these cosmetics. You can often find advertisements on the Internet: “Girls, I just made a coffee scrub yesterday. It’s been stored for three weeks. Pay back faster.” But this is already causing concern. The point is not the opportunity to earn an extra penny, but the fact that this can lead to serious deterioration of health. And this should be done by regulatory authorities.

Dangerous natural

The use of natural products as cosmetics has a right to exist. It should be borne in mind: they are contraindicated in people with sensitive skin and allergies. But it is they who are often convinced of the dangers of "chemistry" and the safety of all natural. Primordial products - berries, fruits and vegetables (primarily peel) - contain a huge amount of substances that protect them from being eaten by insects, which have a slight toxic, irritating and even damaging skin effect. The means prepared industrially include extracts in the form of certain molecules. Providing a stimulating, moisturizing, nourishing effect, they do not irritate the skin
“Once I was faced with the fact that the girl made a mask from pieces of figs, believing that if it is tasty, then it’s still useful. But the peel of the fig has a powerful phototoxic effect. As a result, the girl got a serious burn in the sun. This would never have happened if she applied something cooked industrially to the skin. Therefore, it is better to use fruits and vegetables in the form of juice, adding them to the basic texture - starchy mass, milk or oat jelly.

Only for you

Making cosmetics for you personally is a very fashionable story today that carries a flair of elitism. Special cosmetologists have appeared, to whom the stars in Moscow go. Meanwhile, specialists used to do this because of hopelessness. It was impossible to buy a good finished preparation, so I had to get out - cooking the same camphor was for patients with oily skin.
“Periodically, I advise girls who go to the beautician for an individual prescription with common acne,” says Tiina Orasmäe-Meder. “It costs them 20 thousand rubles a month. Although there are cheaper, beautifully working cosmetics on sale. "star" cosmetologists, as practice shows, at the same time they are working with the same Swiss cosmetics. There is a natural question: why do they need it if they can make anything? All this does not find my understanding. "
